The Lisa Project is an innovative exhibit with a mission to raise awareness on the critical issue of child abuse. Through a multi-sensory journey, visitors are led through various scenarios depicting different facets of child abuse, accompanied by audio narration that offers insights into a child's viewpoint. This immersive experience is carefully crafted to foster a deep understanding of the harsh realities many children endure on a daily basis. Keynote - Youth Suicide: Prevention, Intervention and Postvention for Schools and Communities
Scanlan Center for Mental Health is sponsoring the keynote speaker, Dr. Scott Poland.

Suicide is now either the second or third leading cause of death for youth in the U.S. depending on their age. Elementary-age children are threatening suicide at increasing rates. Suicide rates have increased for children of color. The 2021 YRBS results from the CDC survey of high school-age youth found that 57% of girls and 29% of boys
reported feeling persistently sad or hopeless two or more weeks in a row during the last twelve months. A few states survey middle school students about at-risk behaviors and the results are equally alarming. Schools play a key role in youth suicide prevention by partnering with local and state prevention resources. Schools must be alert to warning signs of suicide and screen students for suicide risk, notify parents and refer for community-based services, and provide follow-up at school. This keynote will provide extensive information on the role of schools and communities in
youth suicide prevention. The suicide of a student is a very traumatic and challenging time and best practices for suicide postvention will be outlined.

In this session, participants will be able to:
1. Know the incidence of youth suicide and analyze the foundational issues for youth suicide.
2. Identify adverse experiences for youth and how they contribute to youth suicide.
3. Identify protective factors that prevent youth suicide.
4. Learn how to develop a comprehensive best practices model for suicide prevention.
5. Learn how to develop a comprehensive best practices model for suicide intervention.
6. Learn how to develop a comprehensive best practices model for suicide postvention.
7. Analyze the complex relationship between bullying and suicide.

ENHANCING SCHOOL SAFETY USING A THREAT ASSESSMENT MODEL: An Operational Guide for Preventing Targeted School Violence

For over 20 years, the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) has conducted research on the thinking and behaviors of those who commit acts of targeted school violence in an effort to prevent future tragedies.  Key findings from this research indicate that establishing multidisciplinary threat assessment teams and encouraging school communities to report concerning behaviors are critical steps in the prevention of targeted violence.

This presentation will highlight past incidents as well as relevant findings and recommendations from NTAC’s latest research on targeted school violence and interrupted school plots in the United States. It will also focus on how communities can use a multidisciplinary approach to identify, assess, and intervene with students exhibiting concerning or threatening behaviors as early as possible.

The Lisa Project & We Can Exhibit
Click here to sign up for Lisa Project

The Lisa Project offers a distinctive multi-sensory exhibit that provides visitors with an immersive experience, allowing them to listen, see, and fully understand the harsh reality of child abuse. Through audio narratives from a child's perspective, guests are guided through different rooms depicting scenarios of abuse. This experience effectively immerses each attendee in the daily challenges faced by these children. As a result of this experience, communities become more informed, with actionable steps provided at the conclusion of the tour to safeguard children and support families. The Lisa Project 10 commences with a harrowing 911 call made by a 6-year-old girl during a domestic violence incident at her residence. Creator Gene Hardin envisioned The Lisa Project to shed light on the issue of child abuse, aiming to promote intervention and prevention measures. The Lisa Project 10 offers a condensed, ten-minute version of the original exhibit, providing easier access for visitors while still delivering the core experience of The Lisa Project.

The "We Can" exhibit is a self-guided experience showcasing visuals and interactive displays designed to assist visitors in recognizing strategies to aid children and families. The messaging emphasizes the cultivation and reinforcement of protective factors including resilience, social and emotional skills, practical support, knowledge of parenting and child development, and social relationships. Additionally, it underscores the individual perspective and commitment that each of us can contribute positively and play a vital role in supporting children and families.

Language Matters in Prevention
Language matters when we are talking about substance misuse prevention.  This session will highlight the common language we can use as teachers, administrators, school staff, and community members to increase protective factors and reduce risk factors when working with young people dealing with substance misuse.  When we use non-judgemental language, meeting a young person where they are, it allows them to think about substance misuse differently and start making choices that protect what they value.  Participants will also learn a little bit about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how they play a role in substance misuse, as well as about a program called Handle with Care that is working locally to reduce substance misuse and prevent ACEs.

Schools and Suicide: Legal Issues and Case Review
The incidence of student suicidal threats and behaviors requires that key school personnel such as administrators and mental health personnel be well trained in assessing suicide risk and following procedures for parent notification and securing student safety. The presenter has been an expert witness in more than 20 cases where schools were sued after a student suicide and will share the outcome of those cases and the lessons learned for prevention, intervention and postvention. Several of those cases questioned the competency of the suicide assessment done by school personnel and their failure to notify parents. Best practices interventions for school counselors and administrators to prevent a tragedy and avoid liability will be outlined. Objectives are the following:
1. Identify key factors that were involved in legal cases that questioned the suicide assessment done by school personnel.
2. Learn the lessons from several legal cases after student suicides pertaining to parent notification and whether when a student is 18 years or older parent notification is required.
3. Understand the complex relationship between bullying and suicide and the outcome of numerous lawsuits filed against schools after their child who was bullied at school died by suicide.
4. Review lessons from a lawsuit filed by parents that criticized the school’s failure to provide a best practice postvention response after the suicide of their first child and the impact on the suicide of their second child a few months later who attended the same high school.

Multi-Tiered Crisis Interventions: Opening Up the Big Room Does Not Work!
Attendees will gain insights into the significance of receiving training on executing multi-tiered crisis interventions and supports. It is essential to recognize that school crisis response differs from community crisis response. Dealing with large-scale events cannot be solely resolved through individual therapy, as not everyone requires the same extent of assistance. The crucial step of performing psychological triage will be highlighted. A comprehensive overview will follow, detailing the range of multi-tiered interventions and supports accessible to school mental health practitioners (and collaborative community mental health stakeholders) based on the NASP PREPaRE Model (PREPaRE WS2: Mental Health Crisis Interventions: Responding to an Acute Traumatic Stressor in Schools, available at https://www.nasponline.org/professional-development/prepare-training-curriculum).

Learning Objectives:
This session aims to assist participants in enhancing their understanding of the following:
  • identify variables that help to estimate the number of individuals traumatized by a crisis
  • conduct psychological triage
  • recognize the differences between common crisis reactions and warning signs that indicate psychological trauma
  • provide school mental health crisis interventions utilizing a multi-tiered approach to include social supports, caregiver training, class meetings, student psychoeducational groups, group crisis intervention, and individual crisis intervention

The Lisa Project & We Can Exhibit
Click here to sign up for Lisa Project

The Lisa Project is an innovative exhibit that aims to raise awareness about the issue of child abuse. Through a multi-sensory experience, visitors are guided through various scenarios depicting aspects of child abuse, with audio narration providing insight into a child's perspective. This immersive experience is designed to help visitors understand the harsh realities that many children face on a daily basis. At the end of the exhibit, visitors are provided with practical steps to help protect children and support families in their communities. The project was inspired by a 911 call made by a 6-year-old girl during a domestic violence incident, highlighting the urgent need for intervention and prevention of child abuse. The Lisa Project in 10 is a condensed version of the original exhibit, offering a shorter but impactful experience for visitors. Despite its shorter duration, it still captures the essence of The Lisa Project, making it more accessible to a wider audience.

The "We Can" exhibit is a self-directed experience showcasing imagery and interactive displays designed to guide visitors in identifying actionable steps to assist children and families. The exhibit emphasizes the importance of bolstering protective factors such as resilience, social and emotional competence, tangible support, knowledge of parenting and child development, and social connections. Furthermore, it underscores the value of individual commitment and participation in making a positive impact, highlighting our collective responsibility in the support of children and families.
