Language Matters in Prevention

Language matters when we are talking about substance misuse prevention.  This session will highlight the common language we can use as teachers, administrators, school staff, and community members to increase protective factors and reduce risk factors when working with young people dealing with substance misuse.  When we use non-judgemental language, meeting a young person where they are, it allows them to think about substance misuse differently and start making choices that protect what they value.  Participants will also learn a little bit about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and how they play a role in substance misuse, as well as about a program called Handle with Care that is working locally to reduce substance misuse and prevent ACEs.
